When Lindsey released her Garden Snails Quilt Pattern, I knew I had to make it. And since only Lindsey can make snails this adorable, I knew I had to make it ASAP. When the Garden Snails Slow Sew Along was announced, I jumped right in, but instead of slow sewing, I had it made within 2 weeks. Oops!

This is a very basic block, and aside from tiny pieces (!) it was very easy, especially since I didn’t do any swirled shells. I used House of Hoppington by Violet Craft for the shells, a coordinating brown for the snail bodies, and a luscious shot cotton for the background. These colors are TOTALLY out of my norm and comfort range, but I really wanted to stretch myself and do something different. Since it was so different, I just used all the extra fat quarters from my bundle to piece the back together.

The shot cotton is extra light, so it was a tad more difficult to sew with. It wanted to fray a lot, so as soon as I’d finish a block I’d carefully set it aside and not touch it until absolutely necessary. When I dropped it off at the quilter’s, I wished her GOOD LUCK! because it just moved all over ha ha! The whole quilt is noticeably lighter because of it, though, and it is perfect for our Arizona temperatures.

My quilter chose a great linen colored thread to coordinate, and she did a funky swirl pattern that looks like a snail trail. We don’t get many snails around here (death by heatstroke) so these guys will have to do for now.

My husband loves this quilt, and although it is baby sized, I told him he could claim it if he wanted to 😉 But for the time being, it has been great to lug outside and sit on in the shade! I’d like to say we use it as we work in our garden, but as the size of the weeds might reveal, we probably don’t spend enough time in there ha!
