When I started my Vintage Daydream quilt, I knew I wanted a classic block. I really loved the block Katie’s Choice, and I found several variations online. This block is really similar to the Vintage and Vintage Remix quilt blocks by Thimbleblossoms, but with a center print. It was such a simple block that I decided to draw up a quick tutorial for you!

To make ONE BLOCK (based on 40″ WOF):

Fabric Requirements:

*Starching before cutting will help when block is cut on the bias*

1 F8th Print fabric, cut into A: (3) 2.5″ x 2.5″, B: (6) 2.5″ x 4.5″, and C: (2) 2.5″ x 6.5″ pieces.

5″ x WOF Background fabric (white), cut into (2) 2.5″ strips. Sub-cut into D: (16) 2.5″ x 3″ and E: (4) 2.5″ x 2.5″ pieces.

Block Construction:

1.  Arrange the block pieces on a flat surface as they should be sewn (on its side), as diagrammed:

2. Sew the pieces into their rows, and press toward the print fabric. Then, beginning with the CENTER ROW (DBEAEBD), sew rows together, lining up the seams. Take time to pin whatever seams match up (every other row will line up), because any wonkiness will make the final step tricky! I found it easiest to sew one half, then the other. The top and bottom D pieces should be sewn centered to the block.

3. Press the block, starting from the center and pressing out- the seams above the center will press up, and below center will press down.

4. Turn the block so it is on the bias, and carefully trim 1/4″ from the seams.

That’s it! You have a finished block!

The block will finish at roughly 11.75″, give or take a little depending on seam accuracy and bias stretch. If you make more than one block, trim to a consistent size- there is a little bit of wiggle room on the D pieces that you can allow for trimming more than 1/4″ at the seams for any size discrepancy.

The great thing about this block size is that you can get 2 blocks from a FQ! For the Vintage Daydream quilt I made, I used F8ths so each block was unique. I also added 2.5″ sashing between each block, and 2.5″ borders too and the finished quilt was a toddler size, 42″ x 54″. It turned out perfectly, and I miss this quilt already!
