When I cleaned up my sewing room, I decided to also give my sewing machine a pretty perch in the form of a new sewing machine mat. I used the free pattern from Nicole of LillyElla Stitchery on Craftsy- she is a paper piecing wizard, but I opted to just go for solid panels using some of my favorite scraps.
I had some cuuuuuuute crochet trim bias tape that I used to edge the pockets. I found the trim in a container of sewing notions my mom gave me years ago- I’ve been waiting for the perfect project for it and this was definitely it!
I don’t have something in every pocket yet, but I do have my small Creative Grids ruler, my Warm Crochet scissors, a seam ripper (I should probably have two of these ha ha!), Wonder Clips, and Unicorn Thread Gloss.
My kids keep coming into the room and telling me how cute my new sewing machine “rug” is. They love the bunny floating in the balloons and the tiny houses, and my favorite is the typewriter in the middle that coordinates with the text print as the main mat fabric. I even got to use some leftover binding scraps to finish the whole thing.
So, the pattern was quick (without the paper piecing) and easy to adapt to a simpler mat. It fit my sewing machine, a basic Bernina 1008, perfectly! Two thumbs up!
