Today’s the day! It’s the new block for the Take Ten Block Challenge! This month’s block is a classic, but I’m calling it Tuileries 🙂 The gardens here in Paris were named after the palace (no longer standing) which was built in the location of and itself named in reference to an old tile-making factory. The etymology is a long one this month but this block looks SO much like a classic tile, I couldn’t help myself!
I know I hinted at a lot of HSTs in this month, but the most convenient part about running this challenge is that I can change my mind on what block will be featured 😉 so I switched what I had previously planned this month with a fast block. I’m still a few blocks short of finishing March, so I didn’t want to get even more behind with another busy block back-to-back.
This month I’m using a Ruby Star Society 10″ stack of Tomato Tomahto. The colors are so fun! I bought the last Andover white fabric (it’s Ice White, so a cool white) on the bolt at my local fabric shop, I couldn’t believe I found a solid cotton fabric and no one really understood my joy at buying plain white fabric 🙂
For Tuileries, you’ll need to cut (1) 5″ x 5″ square, (4) 2.5″ x 2.5″ squares, and (4) 2.5″ x 1.75″ pieces. This month’s cuts result in a big, useful 5″ scrap (and another little bit) that can be used to make my Fizzy Wigs quilt!
Along with the print pieces, you’ll also need to cut from background fabric: (4) 2.5″ x 2.5″, (4) 1.25″ x 2.5″, (8)1.75″ x 2.5″.
You can make this block (or full quilt!) in just a few phases: piecing the center units, then the HSTs. After that, you’ll just need to put the units together in a block!
The blocks don’t take very long, I’ll probably have this finished before my I finish my last little batch of March’s blocks, ha!
When the blocks are sewn together, the HST corners create a secondary scrappy diamond pattern between the main tile blocks.

I wanted to mock this one up in my Swan Serenade fabric, shipping soon to quilt shops! Below is the same quilt in In The Afterglow, coming this summer from Minki Kim.
Happy Quilting!
Hello Melanie, I just want to thank you so much for including the visual 10” square cutting diagrams. I realize for most people it’s not rocket science, but it’s just so nice to have the visual. I can’t make wait to make this quilt and Fizzy Wigs with the leftovers. By the way, I love the photos of Fizzy Wigs at Monument Valley.
I am loving your Take Ten blocks, your sharing of these lovely patterns and I’m happy to subscribe to your site. You are the only blog I am subscribing to. Thank you!! Andrea
I did not get a ten inch block because the half square triangle does not work. You can’t get a 2 1/2 half square triangle using 2 1/2 inch squared. What am I doing wrong. I love the block but there is something wrong with the directions.
This quilt pattern does not include the 2-at-a-time HST method. It uses the standard HST method, using 2 1/2″ squares, to produce one HST at a time. Also, the Take Ten patterns START with a 10″ square, but do not necessarily FINISH as 10″ squares. You will see in the pattern that it finishes at 8.5″. The pattern does not need to be recalculated, but perhaps read over by creators before they start cutting/sewing – a good habit for quilters to have.
