Is it May already? Wow!

This month’s Take Ten Block Challenge block is SO EASY, it is great for a quick gift (are quilts actually quick?) or if you are a beginner, this is the PERFECT block! My month is cut short because of our school holidays so I am glad that this block was in the queue. It’s also a great block for May because we all know Maycember is an actual thing- it is such a busy month!

I am calling this one Gatsby, as it looks a lot like the facade of several of the Art Deco buildings in Paris! That geometric, stacked block look just reminded me of the era.

For my quilt, I’m using Glamp Camp for Riley Blake Designs. The background is their dot fabric in Honey!

Gatsby uses one size cut from each 10″ square: 5 @ 2.5″ x 6.5″

From background fabric, each block uses 4 @ 2.5″ x 2.5″ and 3 @ 2.5″ x 4.5″.

This block is another one where having a Stripology ruler would be super handy. I’m doing fine rotating my mat to make the cuts, but I’m cutting on my sewing room floor and I have a small mat 🙂

This block has essentially two steps: Sew the background pieces to the appropriate print strip, and then sew those columns together in the correct order. I mean, so simple, it’s awesome.

One of the more time-consuming parts of the pattern was figuring out what my final layout was going to be. Since the block sort of undulates, not rotating any blocks will result in a different look! I opted to go for a “plus” shape in the negative space and sort of create that secondary pattern with my final layout.

Another great thing about this block is that it is a larger size- it finishes at 10″ x 10″, so a full quilt would measure 60″ x 70″, a great throw size for us grown ups.

This will be a fun one to finish!

I was going through the upcoming fabrics with Riley Blake Designs and found this Santa Fe collection arriving in July- I can’t imagine a more perfect fabric/pattern pairing!
