Do you ever see some fabric that you just HAVE to get? Actually, who am I kidding? We all have.
Well, this Beauty and the Beast fabric by Jill Howarth for Riley Blake Designs was released a few months ago, and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it! I love everything Jill designs but this line insisted I work on it immediately. Good thing too- I think this line flew off the shelves, and I’m not even sure you can find it in full anymore!
I decided to use my Trixie quilt pattern, which has great fussy cutting potential. I did some math and figured out how much fabric I’d need for the centers of each block, but since I knew I’d be cutting inefficiently (fussy cuts, you know) I got even more! Then, I refigured the math to have all the open “boxes” out of the same fabric too. I picked the dark purple print from the line, since I really wanted the framed look for each block.
Some of the little scenes on the main print were too close together to get the perfect cuts, so I made smaller cuts, and then framed it in background fabric to get it to the right size. Each scene appears in both the standard size, and the smaller framed size. Then, when I assembled the quilt, I alternated the blocks between the full and framed centers.
The final quilt turned out even better than I had hoped!
The fabric line also includes panels, so I just pieced the blue panel (there’s also a pink!) into my backing, and my kids are delighted with both the front and back now!
When it came time to quilt it, I knew I couldn’t go with my home-finished stipple. I sent it to Kelli of Simply Mackbeth, and I picked this fancy clamshell design that looked to me like jewels on a fancy chandelier!
I ended up going with a scrappy binding, using leftovers from my 1/4 yard cuts from the blocks. This large throw quilt is perfect for our little family- we absolutely love it!

Did you need more than a FQ for the frames? As it is all the same color?
For this Beauty and the Beast Trixie throw size, I used about 7/8 yard of the fabric for the frames. Hope that helps!
Thank you. How about the background material? How much of that did you need and what about the backing when you used the panel? I have a FQ bundle and panel of Dorthys Journey and love this pattern the way you used it with these fabrics…Im thinking of doing the same.
Background fabric was essentially the same as in the pattern- I did need maybe 1/8 yd more to frame my center squares that weren’t quite big enough. As for the backing- I actually used a sheet! I’m not sure in yards what that would be insofar as difference in fabric requirements. It was really tricky to center the panel, so I think if I did it again, I’d purposely off-center it- I think if you are using Dorothy’s Journey, some “brick” piecing along with the panel would be a fun way to make the back more interesting!
